MOSSAIR®

What is a MOSSAIR® unit and what does it offer?

The MOSSAIR® unit is a 1m wide x 2m high x 80mm deep living wall unit that can sustain and grow two panels of living moss within it. The units are all manufactured from a single sheet of Plastisol coated steel and is made to last for up to 25 years. Each unit has its own built in micro chip controlled air, feed and lighting system and requires some, but very little, maintenance.

Each of our MOSSAIR® wall units has the pollution collection and cool oxygen generating capabilities of 25 fully grown trees and is efficient at:

  • Naturally filtering air pollution
  • Removing and storing CO2
  • Fixing high levels of NO2
  • reduces airborne viruses
  • reduces dust levels
  • literally eats PM10 and PM2.5
  • producing Fresh Oxygen
  • permanently stores Carbon

MOSS NOT TREES?

SPACE

We are all aware that planting trees can be a good short term way of sequestering carbon, however when it comes to city centres, airports, train stations, bus stations and Schools, land is of short supply. A large tree can need 30 cubic meters of rooting capacity and even smaller trees should be planted 15 to 20 feet apart, we have designed our MOSSAIR® units to be slim (80mm deep) and compact so that they can be used as fencing around schools, airports and bus stations as well as being flat enough to hang on walls in city centres or even bus stops at the side of the road.
"Every MOSSAIR® unit you install will be like planting a grove of trees,
but in an area no bigger than a roadside kerbing block."
Basically we could fit them in almost anywhere in already built up city and urban areas.

TIME

Trees do absorb CO2 and convert it to oxygen and carbon, but once the forest is mature, old trees need to die before a new trees can grow. If the amount of vegetation remains the same, then how can the forest keep absorbing more carbon each year? It can’t. Trees sequester carbon more in summer when new leaves grow but in winter the reverse happens and the dead and decaying trees release carbon back into the atmosphere. Moss however has a slightly different story, As moss grows, underlying moss vegetation dies off and forms peat which is almost 100% Carbon. Peatlands are the most efficient carbon sink on the planet. By using MOSSAIR® units in city centres we can not only sequester pollutants and help clean the air in areas it is needed most, but we can also reuse the moss as plug plants to be used repairing damaged peatland, helping regrow the carbon sinks. Each unit is then replaced with a fresh growing moss panel, keeping it's sequestering levels at it's peak. Our MOSSAIR® units work from the moment they are installed, constantly removing pollution.

STORAGE

Reports from the UN Environment program finds that peat is the largest and most efficient land-based store of carbon, and the world’s second largest carbon store after the oceans. Peat bogs store on average 10 times more carbon per hectare than any other ecosystem, including forests. We aim to help replenish these peat bogs by adding more of the vital upper wet living layer to peat which stops it releasing its carbon store into the atmosphere. Sphagnum moss is way ahead of trees at sequestering carbon and it has been doing it since life began on Earth. Currently in the UK 95% of our peatlands are damaged and emitting carbon, we can help by growing moss and repairing these areas. MOSSAIR® units will first nurture and grow the sphagnum moss - using this growth to help clean the air in our City centres and other highly polluted areas. Then, once the moss is hardened off we can replenish the necessary top wet layer to the damaged peatland areas whilst replacing the MOSSAIR® units with fresh new growing moss panels.

EFFECT

The effects of adding living moss walls to busy urban areas are not only beneficial to the environment from the moment they are installed, but will continue to improve the air quality for up to 25 years. Our MOSSAIR® are built to last and, as the moss growing in each removable panel gets to its maximum storage yield, we can simply replace the internal panels with new, fresh growing moss. Moss is quite unique among plants as it does not have roots. This means, instead of using a root system to put pollutants into the soil beneath, it converts pollutants into sugar (energy) and oxygen using the process of photosynthesis. Moss then uses the Sugar and other minerals it gets from water to grow and reproduce but the oxygen is released back into the air. By using this process moss has many useful attributes -

  • Better Quality Air
  • Less Airborne Dust
  • Stabilises Moisture Levels
  • Lower Carbon Dioxide Levels
  • Noise Reduction
  • Lowers Air Temperature

CREATING CLEAN CITY AIR

Now is your time to change the rules. Lead, decide. empower. It's your turn to change the rules of inner city pollution.

When adding MOSSAIR® units to your local habitat you will develop a clean air environment which is not only reduces harmful ozone gases but also, literally eats, airborne dust and harmful particulate matter (PM2.5 & PM10). Each unit supports within it the growth of 2 X panels of living moss. Developed to not only lower pollution levels in urban areas but then permanently store the removed pollution when it is used to help repair damaged peatland areas.
